MAJOR J. H. BROMHEAD, M.B.E., D.C.M.

The main part of this section of the website, devoted to the 11th Gloster (Bristol) Battalion, Home Guard, consists of the 1940-1941 History of "R" Company of that Battalion. This was written, in manuscript, by Major J.H. Bromhead, M.B.E., D.C.M.

Further research by Ian Smith into the life of this Home Guard officer and Great War survivor, beyond what is written in his History, reveals what Ian has discovered.

Major J. H. Bromhead continued to serve with the 11th Gloster (City of Bristol) Home Guard until the end of the war. He was awarded an MBE, as published, in the Fourth Supplement to The London Gazette of Tuesday 12th December 1944 on 15th December 1944, (page 5744). It was through this entry that I discovered his full name - up to that point I had only known him as J.H. Bromhead.

Born on 22nd December 1893, in Clifton, Bristol, to George Frederick Bromhead (Photographer), and Kate A. (nee Hartland), Jack Hartland studied at Bristol Grammar School between 1904-1910. He was married in April 1924 to Margaret Maud Cook.

Jack Hartland Bromhead MBE DCM died on 19th March 1977.

When Jack Hartland Bromhead was a Sergeant in the 1st Royal Gloucester Hussars Yeomanry Regiment, Service No. 235050, he was awarded the D.C.M. after being recommended by the following text dated 15th May 1918:-

Sergeant Bromhead was in charge of a standing patrol on the night of 2/3rd May and is recommended for coolness & leadership on the following facts. His patrol of 8 men was holding an advanced sangar across the road facing HOWEN Bridge. At 0315 on the 3rd a strong enemy mounted patrol came up the road with a view to seizing the sangar which they had held the previous night. Sergeant Bromhead allowed the enemy to get to close range and then opened fire. Fifty rounds were fired before the enemy could retire into cover round a corner. An early morning patrol reported from the state of road severe casualties must have been inflicted on enemy men and horses.” (See References 2)

At that time the 1st Royal Gloucester Hussars Yeomanry Regiment was part of the Australian Mounted Division which was serving in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign. Between 30th April and 4th May the Division was involved in the Second Battle of Jordan.

The award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to "Sjt. J. H. Bromhead Yeo.(Clifton)" was approved by King George V as part of his birthday honours list for "... distinguished services in connection with Military Operations with the British Forces in Egypt", as published, in the Third Supplement to the London Gazette of 31st May 1918 on 3 June 1918, (page 6491).
