HOME GUARD MEMORIES AND INFORMATION - STAFFORDSHIRE

WEST BROMWICH HOME GUARD
and
NORMAN BARRATT

West Bromwich was defended by two battalions, the 28th and 29th Staffordshire (West Bromwich) Battalions.

Amongst the members of these two Battalions, each of which would have comprised between 1000 and 2000 men, were Norman Barratt (seen right), Stanley Hunt and Lt. H. W. Barratt (no known relationship).

A cheerful image survives of a constituent unit in one of these two Battalions in which Norman and Stanley appear. It was taken in July 1943; a possible location of the Drill Hall, Carters Green has been suggested although this is unconfirmed. The size of the group suggests that it shows one of the several Companies which made up each Battalion.

Norman Barratt is 13th from the left, fourth row back; Stanley Hunt 2nd from the right, front row.
