Pte. Charles William
Hughes was a member of the
1st Warwickshire
(Warwick) Battalion, Home Guard,
responsible for the defence of the town of Warwick
itself.
A few documents of his
service survive and are contained in this page. First, evidence of his
prowess in 1944 in many of the skills of a good
infantryman:
It appears that
at some stage after these tests, Pte. Hughes
found himself transferred to anti-aircraft
duties with the 72nd Heavy A.A. (H.G.) Battery,
8 Sub-Section D Troop at an unknown, but almost
certainly nearby, location. The evidence
is contained in the following Supper menu held
on Thursday December 14th 1944 to celebrate the
stand-down of the Home Guard less than a
fortnight previously. Or is it? Is this the same
Pte. Hughes?? The menu bears the name of Pte. G.
Hughes rather than Pte. C. W. and yet it comes from the same source of
information.....
....to be
clarified in due course.....
