BATTALION
OFFICERS
The officer whom Leslie Frost
remembers was Major J.
R. Frost who also held the rank of Captain
in the Territorial Army. In the 1941 Register
no officer named Shaw
is listed in the 5th Shropshire Battalion although
there was a 2/Lt. L.H. Shaw recorded as a member
of the 1st Battn. This may be the same gentleman
who was transferred into the 5th after February
1941 or the Shaw at Blockleys was possibly a
senior NCO. Leslie is himself not mentioned
as clearly his promotion came at a later date.
Other senior officers in
the 5th in 1941 were the C.O., Lt. Col. F.H.L.
Oldham, DSO; and Majors A.W. Foster, MC, R.D.
Newill, J.W. Brown and J. Simpson. A total of
52 officers are listed as members of the 5th
Battn. and amongst them are no doubt many surnames
which still resonate in Wellington; they include
a 2/Lt. A.R. Blockley and Lt. Lander. And beyond
these men stand many hundreds of NCOs and Other
Ranks all giving freely of their time between
June 1940 and December 1944.
